Concrete Driveways and Flatwork on Evansville's North Side
If you drive through the North Side of Evansville — up North Main Street, around the areas near Mesker Park, through the neighborhoods off Diamond Avenue — you'll see a lot of concrete that's seen better days. Cracked driveways, sunken sidewalks, patios with spalled surfaces. The freeze-thaw cycles we get in this part of Indiana are rough on concrete, and a lot of the flatwork in North Side neighborhoods was poured decades ago without the benefit of modern mix designs or proper reinforcement.

We always assess the subgrade before pouring and make adjustments: adding a thicker gravel base, installing drainage solutions, or using a higher PSI mix when the conditions demand it. Stringtown has some of the oldest concrete flatwork in the Evansville area, and it shows. Many of the sidewalks and driveways in this neighborhood were poured in the 1950s and 60s, and they've taken on decades of freeze-thaw damage, tree root intrusion, and vehicle loading. When we work in Stringtown, we're often doing replacement rather than repair — the existing concrete has simply reached the end of its service life.
But we also see situations where the concrete itself is sound but the surrounding ground has shifted. Tree roots from the mature maples and oaks along Stringtown Road have lifted sidewalk sections and driveway aprons, creating trip hazards and drainage issues. In those cases, we can sometimes grind down the raised edges or replace just the affected sections rather than tearing out the entire slab. It depends on the condition of the surrounding concrete, and we'll always give you both options if they're viable.
